Tools & guidance for navigating ethical challenges in philanthropy

Philanthropy has come under increasing scrutiny in recent years in terms of the sources of wealth underlying charitable gifts, the allocation of resources, and its decision-making processes. More than ever, those engaged in philanthropy need an ethical orientation to inform their work.

Combining expertise from The Grantmaking School and the Council on Foundations, this session will:

• Encourage you to reflect on how the concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion can inform ethical decision-making
• Enable you to understand to whom and to what you are accountable in your work
• Provide you with practical tools and step-by-step guidance in navigating ethical problems

Michael D. Layton, Ph.D., is the W.K. Kellogg Community Philanthropy Chair at the Johnson Center for Philanthropy. Michael brings a wealth of experience to this role, including his work as a researcher, teacher, director, advocate, and consultant. He has worked closely with a mix of community philanthropy organizations throughout the Americas, and brings to his position a nuanced understanding of the unique challenges and capacities of community philanthropy to act as a catalyst in promoting community-led development and in strengthening the local context for philanthropy. Ben McDearmon, J.D., is part of staff counsel for the Council on Foundations and responds to members’ requests for legal analysis and information on a wide range of subjects. He also serves as a legal reviewer for the National Standards for Community Foundations accreditation program and as a contributing editor to Mastering Foundation Law: The Council on Foundations Compendium of Legal Resources. He was a member of Washington & Lee University School of Law’s tax clinic during his third year and helped low-income taxpayers resolve their disputes with the IRS and the Virginia Department of Taxation.
