Tools for Triage: Advancing Mission During Crisis
We’re online! This workshop will be presented online through Zoom. All registrants will receive the access link and password via email the day before the event.

As a nonprofit practitioner, you’re probably familiar with the phrase, “flying the plane as we build it.” This sector is used to operating under immense pressure to make progress toward social good. Yet, in times of turbulence, how can we continue to make progress? Are there parts of the “plane” that we can re-prioritize or let go of in order to keep us in the air?

Join us for a 75-minute session to discuss a Return on Investment (ROI) framework you can use to help ensure that you and your organization are making informed and strategic decisions quickly — allowing you to navigate turbulent times and crises.

We’ll cover:

  • Assessing program areas on ROI
  • Applying a Sustainability Matrix to program areas
  • Identifying red flags and opportunities for efficiency
  • Building your case for strategic decisions at the board level

Kevin Peterson is a program coordinator for learning services at the Johnson Center for Philanthropy. A graduate of Grand Valley State University, Kevin is board co-chair of the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network of Grand Rapids, and serves on the steering committee for the annual Mayor’s River Cleanup through the West Michigan Environmental Action Committee. Dr. Salvatore Alaimo is associate professor of nonprofit management at Grand Valley State University. His research interests are in the areas of evaluation, volunteer management and contract management. Dr. Alaimo produced a documentary entitled “What is Philanthropy?” that enhances our understanding of the concept of philanthropy and its role in American society. Learn more about Dr. Alaimo.
