Advance Your Nonprofit Career: How to Advocate for Yourself & Ask for More!

Imagine a scenario where you’re asking your nonprofit employer for additional compensation. This could be a new job, a promotion, after earning a higher degree, or advocating for better compensation for the work you do now. You may ask yourself a lot of questions, including: How much should I ask for? How do I ask for more? How do I even get started? If this sounds familiar, this virtual lunch & learn is for you!

Join us for a panel conversation facilitated by the Johnson Center’s Tamela Spicer, in partnership with the Nonprofit Graduate Student Organization at Grand Valley State University, focused on advocating for yourself as you advance in your nonprofit career.

Emma Powell, Ph.D., CNP, is an associate professor in the School of Politics, Society, Justice, and Public Service at Central Michigan University. She specializes in nonprofit organization infrastructure, the effects of organizational structure on internal motivation and communication, as well as the impacts it has on external commitment to the mission. She enjoys governance learning and development and looks for opportunities to connect research to practice within the sector, beyond academia. In addition to her teaching and research interests, Dr. Powell serves as the director of the Nonprofit program and primary advisor for the nonprofit curriculum. Learn more about Emma.

Jenny Shalifoe has been a member of the talent acquisition team at the American Heart Association since 2004. Over her career, she has focused on recruitment for both regional and national professional-level positions. Her most recent role on the Talent Acquisition team has enabled her to focus on recruitment business operations. She has been recognized with the American Heart Association’s Key to Success, Team Player of the Year, and Operations Excellence awards. Jenny graduated from the University of Michigan with a double major bachelor’s degree in psychology and political science. She has also received a bachelor-level certificate in human resources from Davenport University.

Keith Timko, M.B.A., is the executive director at Support Center in New York. He brings over 25 years of experience in the sector, spanning nonprofit leadership and management, community development, education, and urban policy. At the Support Center, Keith leads efforts to strengthen social change by developing and promoting an integrated and collaborative approach to capacity building for nonprofit organizations and social enterprises.

Tamela Spicer, M.A., is a senior program manager at the Johnson Center for Philanthropy. As a member of our learning services team, she guides sector leaders and organizations in discovering how they can work within their own ecosystems to create community change grounded in justice and belonging.
