Karen Hoekstra joined the Johnson Center in 2015 and currently serves as marketing and communications manager. In this role, she leads the Johnson Center’s graphic design and branded communications efforts including the Johnson Center website, email newsletters, and publications such as The Foundation Review and the annual 11 Trends in Philanthropy report.

Karen’s approach to her work prioritizes accessible design and is guided by the belief that communication is most powerful when it embraces clear, inclusive, and person-first language.

Previously, Karen worked in graphic design and marketing for several nonprofit organizations in West Michigan. Prior to her time in the nonprofit sector, she led the creative teams at both a small advertising agency and a local TV station, in addition to serving clients including Mercy Health, the Saint Mary’s Foundation, the Home & Building Association of Greater Grand Rapids, and Holland Board of Public Works as a freelance designer. Karen studied visual communications at Kendall College of Art and Design at Ferris State University.

In her personal philanthropic efforts, Karen supports organizations focused on the protection of human rights, women’s rights, and a more open, equitable, and just democracy.
