Grounded in research and informed by practice, our programs support individuals, organizations, and networks in navigating complex challenges, increasing access and opportunity, and building a culture of learning across the sector.
Grantmakers from across the U.S. and around the world have participated in our courses.
Our professional learning programs connect cutting-edge university research with the real-world challenges and opportunities of community change. Grounded in current research, theory, and data, our programs equip you with practical tools and insights to strengthen your daily work and rethink the broader systems that shape philanthropy.
Each course is grounded in the Johnson Center’s Program Officer Competency Model© — a validated, research-based framework outlining the essential knowledge, skills, and behaviors of effective program staff. This alignment ensures participants gain practical skills that reflect current standards of excellence in philanthropy.
For over two decades, the Johnson Center has delivered professional learning programs and resources for grantmakers. Our programs are led by experienced practitioners with deep knowledge of philanthropy and research, and are designed to value what each participant brings — including prior knowledge and perspectives.
Our programs are available in both virtual and in-person formats to meet your individual or group needs. While minor adjustments to content or activities may occur, core learning objectives and best practices in adult learning remain consistent. Public programs are typically virtual, while private programs can be delivered in either format.
We help you and your colleagues build the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to do impactful work.
